I liked Primeval (especially the last series), and I'm with you on the whole cliffhanger thing. I thought when I saw it that it was a really bad idea to end it like that given how much trouble ITV are in, and the high probability of it being cancelled, especially as it can't have been cheap to make with all the SFX (even if they weren't always that good). This is one time I'm definitely not happy to be right. 
Why couldn't they have ended it with Connor and Abby finding the hoofer doofer, going to get whasisfacenewdude from where he ended up, and then back to the ARC all ready for the next series (or not as it turned out). Gits and idiots!!!!!!
