Hovis may be gone soon...*he's gone*

He's getting really cheesed off at me having to clean him, and I've noticed he's not even moving to pee and is just sitting in it. I've also had to 'help' him pass his poops once or twice as he's had trouble. He's also lost interest in his treats, even his shreddies covered with Senior Aid. As much as I don't want my last little man to go, I'm thinking it's getting to the point where keeping him going is selfish, as he's obviously not happy. I'm waiting to see if he'll pick up a bit, but I think I'm going to be taking him on his last vet trip before Xmas. Was hoping he'd keep up his 'good boy' routine and pass away in his sleep, but obviously he has no intention of doing that. Swine!!!
This is the only bit of rat-keeping I hate.....

I wouldn't use boys not moving to pee as an indicator tho.
Linzi

Poor old man rat.   I know what you mean about hating this part of rat keeping (I'm sure we all do).
JaneAustensRats

I know what you mean, I hate it too. Its too hard to see them struggle so much when they have been such wonderful pets. I miss my gang.

all the best honxx

aww bless him

you only know when the right time is, Ive been 'lucky' in that all mine have gone in their sleep or very quickly in my arms o have never had to go through the whole debate.

It is the hardest part of being a parent to a pet isnt it. I guess you just have to look back on the good memories and console yourself in the fact that the vet will help him go to sleep and be pain free forever.

big hugs tho

That was worrying, but not too much aside from his legs going pink as a result (and they DID look quite sore). The fact that he's not eating or drinking and won't even touch his treats is what's making me think he's had enough.I mean the whole 'I don't even want my Senior Aid' is a great indicator as he loves the stuff and now doesn't want to know. I've also noticed as well as his back legs being more or less immobile, his front paws are going the same way and are almost permanently formed into fists. He also seems to be breathing really badly and heavy. Have phoned the vets and he's going for his final trip at about 5.20 this afternoon. So round about half past he'll be there going 'nyeh nyeh' to his brothers and saying how he beat them all!!!Plus he has a lovely spot picked out next to his brother under the japanese maple.

Have also made the difficult decision that as much as I love the rodents, I'm going to get a mog next time (or possibly a mutt) and just content myself with coming here and cooing over your ratties! At least for the forseeable future anyways.....although I'm keeping hold of my Freddie cage just in case.....

BTW If anyone wants 3/4 of a bottle of Senior Aid to try before they buy it or just to top up their stock, let me know. I'd hate for it to go to waste.
Dragonrat

I'm sorry, hun.  It sounds like the right decision, but it's always so hard.
RattyHelen

I'm really sorry Will be thinking of you both
Linzi

I'm sorry, Shelley.   Give the old boy a goodbye scritch from me.

He will thank you for being strong and letting him go. It sounds like the right thing to do.

Well as it turns out, he also had a large abdominal lump which I hadn't noticed cos he was such a fattie. So as daft as it sounds, I don't feel quite as bad about having him PTS now, as the vet said it was quite big and wouldn't have been worth operating on. It may also have been a contributing factor to his toileting inability...
RattyHelen

Awww, run free boy, free from lumps bumps and rubbish lungs.

 for you xx
Linzi

Sleep well old man.
