Hiya! new to the site!hiya im frankie im 18 from north-east (saltburn-by-the-sea) :)i have 3 rats 2 bucks and 1 doe how i first thought about getting rat- my friend has 1 and she is adorable! got really attatched so i thought i'd get one myself. 
i got my 1st rat in january (his name is spunky) he is brilliant, really funny  ! i never thought rats could be so affectionate, hes my big fat gaffa rat! lol and i got another male in febuary to keep him company (name-giz) spunkys little side-kick! aaaaaaaaaaand got another 1 later on in febuary her names daisy shes really sweet! they are a funny bunch! obviously i have the bucks in 1 cage and doe in another lol dont really fancy up to 20 kittens running around lol.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Photos are pretty much obligatory, so be warned.
Have you thought about getting a companion for Daisy? Rats really don't cope well alone. Can I ask where you got them from? I'm between Middlesbrough and Redcar, and I've yet to find any local breeders. |

i got my first rat (spunky) from a pet shop in guisbrough, not jaspers. i got my 2nd rat (giz) from pets at home at teesside park and my lastest rat (daisy) from norton, i saw an ad on website called preloved and i thought i would go and have a look and decided i'd have her lol lol Yep been thinking about getting daisy a little cage mate since i got her lol i'll get her a mate next week a think :) i'll be getting spunkys 2 sons aswell this week lol i think im a rataholic lol i just want more and more lol

spunky my black hooded is funny because hes really keen on other people lol my friend went to pick him up and he ran to the bottem of the cage and she tried again she had hold of him but then he jumped on me and ran inside my coat

As beautiful as they are , i noticed you have straw as a base in your cage ..it's really not very good to use as a base i'm afraid
Have you tried anything else ? |

oh yes i know! that picture is when i 1st got her, she came with a cage and it already had straw in... i use wood pellet cat litter and for in their lil houses i use cotton wool bedding and/or kitchen roll tissue | ||||

Wood pellets arent the best thing either, as they dissolve into a kind of pulpy-dust when wet
If you use a litter, a paper based one is much better for the rats health ... sorry if it sounds like a lecture, it's not meant to be Also cut up cardboard pieces (ecopetbed etc) are wonderful as a basecovering |

Shredded paper is fab for bedding too, and my lot love doing their own shredding with the sheets of newspaper I use on my cage base. Daft girls that they are! | ||||

BioCatolet's (paper-based) a good cat litter for cage bases. They seem to have altered the Bob Martin's paper-based, though, and it's more like clay and is all dusty, so steer clear there. *fumes quietly at Bob Martin* | ||||

Ecopetbed. Bear in mind I have 20 boys living together and they still only need cleaning out weekly. (Tho the shelves need wiping roughly every three seconds) |

biocatolet here too, but i also get it delivered to the door.
SPS pet supplies, or local pet shop deliver it. Most good pet shops sell biocatolet. Im still using the bale of ecopetbed from aura about a year or so ago! Trouble with that is you have to buy a bale and storage is a real issue |

That's why I've never bothered with summat like Ecopetbed - I've got no where to store it!

I've started using Megazorb for the rats as well as the rabbits litter trays, and I've found that the rats don't smell as much or as fast as they did when I was using cardboard squares | ||||
