After several years of "Getting round to it" I have finally started reading Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic novel Crime and Punishment. It has been translated into English (Which is useful as I can't read russian!!) and is acclaimed by many as being a must read.

If and when I get to the end of it I wil let you know what I think!!

I've found that most 'classics' I've read are overrated, but that's just me!

You and me both.  Rather you than me, Ben.  My ex-husband went through a phase of reading that and similar books, and I can't say that any of them shouted 'read me!'

I don't know. I really don't have much of a taste for the classics. I don't even really like Dickens.
I'm a philistine, so sue me.

Jane Austen is one of the few classic authors that I do like.  I don't mind Shakespeare either (as long as I'm not forced to study it!!!).

I don't like most Dickens (except for the Muppet version of A Christmas Carol - but that doesn't really count), except for the fact that he comes up with some fab names for his characters.

I'm not madly keen on the Bronte's, and Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is one of the biggest loads of pants I've ever read.

I don't do classics like Austen etc, much preferring those based along the lines of Greek Mythology

Crime and Punishment is the sort of thing i would read, and enjoy doing so

Im really poorly cultured, anything older than myself, Im not interested in.

That incluses black and white films.  Schindlers list and Wizard of Oz only just get through.

Ditto.  Although Dracula and Frankenstein are considered classics here, and are required reading.

I think part of my lack of interest in classics is the way you have to dissect texts at school for English.  Other than Macbeth, To Kill a Mockingbird and possibly Murder in the Cathedral, you couldn't pay me to re-read any of my GCSE or A-Level English texts purely because that's ruined them.

I love most classics including Rebecca and Dickens, just something so different and more meaningful than the pap that generally gets churned out into paperback these days
