Hi All

I thought I would start off by introducing myself and my rat. We mum and I adopted a lovely male rat this week from our local pets at home he had been sitting there for 3 week - a month poor guy everyone would go past his tank and say ergh look at that it was so hurtful them doing that just because he is like an agouti colour seems people associate this with the wild rat colour.

We decided we would give him a loving home for th rest of his life he is so friendly and loving and seems to have taken to me, He has a freddy 2 cage with a hammock which he loves sleeping in also has a litter tray and toys.

We are thinking of maybe getting him neutured as he is dribling wee on me and scent marking me aswell, seems to have this thing for me lol. We called him Kamarlie and he is 10 months old he's just like a child very spoilt and loved.

We also thought about getting him a friend and have decided not to he is happy on his own and loves being with human company.

Kamarlie is my 3rd rat I used to have 2 girls years ago who were sisters. They were hooded rats. I also have other animals which includes 14 syrians, 2 chinese and 2 white white hamsters, 6 cats, 4 guinea-pigs, 2 rabbits, 2 budgies and 2 dogs. Our family loves animals and have always been brought up with them.

Your boy sounds lovely! Can we see some pictures?

I'd definitely get him a boy friend or two

I'm not sure if neutering would solve the wee problem - that's him just marking you as his property!

It's a sign of affection if you like! My girls do it too

People normally neuter for aggression, at around 6 months when their hormones kick in, if he's not biting I wouldn't risk the anesthetic, he sounds gorgeous!

Hi Helensy many thanks for your welcome. Will definatly try and get some piccies asap.

We are going to leave him for the time being as an only rat he's always been a lone rat from his previous owner from what we know and when he came into pets at home with his previous owner he's been on his own for 10 months now. Also means getting another cage and and another rat and we are full to capacity what with having the rabbits, guinea-pigs and all the hamsters. Kamarlie has been humanised so much he has relied on humans for play mates and is very much spoilt and well loved with us, he is always out and about.

Thanks for the info on the weeing lol making me his property would rather he showed it slightly differently but still bless him lol. Nope he's not biting loves kissing hands and fingers.

Hello, and welcome.
I once had a rat that thrived on being a lone rat, so it is possible, but it still might be a nice idea to get two babies in the future as 99% of rats do do better with company.
Also rats are incontinent, and have no control over their bladder most of the time anyway.

Boys definitely wee more than girls do. I would say that our neutered boys wee less, but it's not something that I'd put a rat through a potentially fatal operation for.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Tis true that they are very widdly creatures, some worse than others!

Even though you may think now that you only want one rat, if you're anything like the rest of us you'll soon find out how addictive they are. GMR (Get More Rats) is a common 'illness' round here!

Hi All

Thanks for your replies much appreciated. Rats are lovely I must admit and we aren't sure why now we didn't carry on having rats they are lovely. Lol can't have anymore rats at the moment we are full to capacity with having 18 hamsters and the rabbits and guinea-pigs we have no more room.

Thanks for your replies on the weeing issue nope definatly not biting he loves kissing instead

. Won't risk the neuturing unless completly necessary saying that though we did get our male mouse (rescue he was rescued as a lone mouse) neutured but that was necessary as he was depressed so we got him 2 rescue lady friends who he adores and is a very happy man.

Ah okies rats are incontinent I didn't know that thanks for that.

Lol thanks tigerbabe for the link and the lovely people.

At the moment we are going to see how Kamarlie does he is very happy boy at the moment who loves human company and lots of cuddles and attention (I think he thinks he's a child) lol.

Lol I think I must be insane

with the amount of hamsters I have
